Luck of the Irish smiling on Sapperton Rovers' win
By Tom Berridge
Let Christmas wait.
That's the feeling in the dressing room of the Vancouver Men's Soccer League Sapperton Rovers these days, following a 3-0 victory over Rino's Westside at Hillcrest Park Sunday.
The win, Sapperton's seventh in 12 premier division starts, left the New Westiminster-based club solidly in second place overall in group B behind runaway leader Pegasus A.
Westside remained in third four points behind the Rovers with a record of 5-5-3.
"It puts us in a great spot. The way Pegasus is playing right now, it's too bad the break is coming when it is. I just want to keep moving on. We have a game in hand and two points clear (of third place) and seven points from Pegasus who have a game in hand," said Rovers player/coach Bryan Wevers.
Sapperton took the lead on a pair of second-half penalty kicks by Trevor Todd and Shane Mummery after a scoreless first half.
Paul Favaro struck for his team-leading fifth marker of the season, finishing off a header in the final 10 minutes of the match.
With the fourth best record in the VMSL to date at 7-4-1, Wevers is gettting full value from the players against the top half of the 14-team league.
Sapperton is the only team to have inflicted a loss on Pegasus and they also have Ws in the win column against A leader Surrey United.
"I don't find with our team just one guy steps it up. When you look at the guys we have like Trevor Todd, he really impresses me. He deserves to be here and he's showing up. Shane (Mummery) and Paul (Favaro), and in every position on the field, we're strong, and it's a good feeling," Wevers added.
The Rovers will have to be strong heading into their final match of the fall schedule.
Last up is last-place Indo FC, 2-0 winners over Sporting Club last week.
While Sapperton has done well against the better teams, its four losses to date have come against lesser opponents.
Sapperton is away to Indo at McNair secondary Sunday at 2 p.m.
"It's a big game for us and we know it," Wevers added.
